TASK 5: READERSHIP PROFILE

  • A readership profile of your audience looking, in detail, at who your target audience are.
  • This profile should provide the following information:

What age range do they fit into?

After doing researches and taking survey result into consider, I have decided to aim my target audience around the age of 16-20 year old (young teens). As they are more into the modern music and are more aware of the social media updated with latest favorite bands, artist , programs etc..

What gender are they?

I have decided to focus this music magazine on both genders so more audience would be able to read this. Not only that also because I don;t want to be gender bias as I believe its equality right for a big audience and more appreciation.

What brands do they like?

Don't have one particular.

What music do they like?

After all my analysis of my music questionnaire I have found out that my audience are more into RnB leading onto that was rock music , right away I could see the contrast of the music that my audience would like.

What socio-economic group do they fit into?

This profile should be engaging and inventive, try to think of innovative ways you can show who your audience are.

TASK 3: MUSIC MAGAZINE ANALYSIS

CONTENT PAGES

RESEARCH EXAMPLE:

MY ANALYSIS

Ariana Grande
This content page features Ariana Grande (Pop artist) , the use of masthead is slanted to the right side. The lettering of the contents text is medium. This contents page is simple, containing just one image centered on the page with a lot of white space background to elude sophistication and glamour in the magazine. The magazine features are ordered in a simple list at the right of the page, giving readers a guidance of where to find specific features of the magazine. The word contents is spread across to the left side of the page width at the top in black bold text to state the page and it’s purpose in the magazine. The artist main image is represented in the right side to towards the contents masthead. Her posture is over the medium shoulder shot. The color of the background of the magazine is grey and plain connotes simplistic outlook. This magazine represents a nice shade of black and blond which makes the artist stand out and the magazine look much well structured. This helps the audience makes it much more simple to read and understand the layout of the content. I would use the idea of list of bullet-point structured layout to make the work much more well-organised. I would not use small lettering for the content pages info.

Kanye West
This content page features Kanye West (Pop artist). This is a contents page from ‘Vibe’ magazine
features a lot of artists including genres like R&B an hip-hop. The background the main colors being black, grey and white apart from the single heart-shaped prop in the woman's hand. The use of the prop and the placement of the hand implies that she is perhaps stealing his heart. This contents page of Vibe has a clear structure and layout so readers know what is included in the magazine and what pages to find the articles/posters or information on. Vibe usually has three contents pages in their magazine; this allows the text to be spread out which benefits the audience to find information.
The main image which is central of the page is of the rapper Kanye West. This could suggest that he would be featured in one of the articles. He also wears a grey suit with his hands in his pockets which suggest he is confident as well as depicting a laid back attitude. The contrast could suggest that maybe the theme of the magazine is about love. The shot uses a direct mode of address which shows that it is directly addressing the audience.Vibe is identifying with their target audience as contemporary media users (internet). The audience of this magazine would be 17+. I would use some of the features like the use of metaphoric main image to give out more meaningful features. On the other hand, I would not use the bland color scheme.

TASK 3: MUSIC MAGAZINE ANALYSIS

FRONT COVERS

POP
This is a POP billboard magazine establishing the well-known celeb 'Katy Perry' as the center of focus. The Masthead of billboard is large and bold with its featured colors in it's lettering. This use of vibrant color scheme and clear font right away makes this effective and thus this makes it recognizable as a logo as it is unique. Billboard is a flagship property for the billboard information group. This also consists of the billboard biz. Billboard.com, billboard chart alert etc. Billboard is headquartered in New York and Bureaus in London, Miami and Los Angeles, and has editorial in  in huge cities around the globe. Billboard's masthead is simple. The font is easy to read, the color used for the masthead is black with the inside of the letters A and D colored in blue and yellow and it is in Sans Serif.

In the front cover of this magazine Katy Perry (the artist) is  looking directly at the camera; this connotes that the she is trying to establish a relationship or connection with the reader. The artist is presented 'as the queen of pop'.  The magazine has used medium shot, she looks flawless and it is well-represented. The use of the color scheme pink background and mainly black lettering, few yellow and white lettering detonates that front cover as appealing much vibrant and bubbly. This connotes pop, and its shown through the use of colors and the layout of the magazine. The target audience for Billboard mainly is aimed at both gender equally around the ages of 17-29 because the layout and the contents of the magazine is mature but the font they use gives it its modern touch.
I would use some of the features of the magazine in my own music magazine front cover for instance : the unique design idea of the billboard font. I would note this as this would make my magazine stand out therefore it would be more recognizable and appealing. I would not too vibrant colors because it would make my font look confusing and the importations would not stand out much because everything would be merged into one bright magazine.

Q

This is a Q magazine another pop genre style of magazine. Although that is the case this magazine is a contrast to the magazine above. The Q magazines logo is the largest through out the magazine and bold. The lettering is in white and the block background of it is red this makes the logo standout more featuring important with the use of red highlighted. Q is a popular music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom.Q was founded in 1986 by Mark Ellen and David Hepworth, who were dismayed by the music press of the time. Cheryl Cole is represented and detonates as a very furious, strong, confident look to the music magazine which has a connotation of passion.

The use of dark, bold, blunt color scheme makes the front cover of the magazine appear very cool and strong. The highlight of the main image of the music artist is her lipstick dark red, and her hair-dark-black. The body language of the artist make the magazine a sense of sexy bold features. I would say the  audience for this magazine would be ages of 17-20+ the layout and the contents of the magazine is mature the font they use gives as strong outlook.
I would only use the concept of  how the main image of Cheryl Cole is presented which fills up the whole front cover with her face,  an extreme close up.  By the image taking up the whole page it leaves no dead space and creates its own different background to the page. On the other hand I would not use this the color scheme of the front cover of this magazine because for me it personally appear too blunt and vulgar.

VIBE

This is a pop rap, Vibe magazine featuring the artist Eminem. The masthead is bold and the font uses capitals this instantly makes the the Vibe more dramatic and obvious. Vibe is an American music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. The publication predominantly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. In the main image Eminem is looking straight ahead at the camera with a moody , hump looking expression on his face. The shot that has been used for this cover front is a medium shot, he has a closed body posture, his arms are crossed. The use of this pose and expression connotes the 'rapper' persona of being cool and serious. Another reason being his closed body posture could be because he is showing off his tattoo's denotation the look of a rapper.

The magazine appears to be very simple yet appealing , stands out and easily readable. The magazine layout isn't overfilled with images and texts and is rather kept simple which one reason why it is aimed at late teens and young adults. Billboard magazine is an American magazine so the audience are likely to be interested in the American culture. I would the centre placement of the main image as it is more appealing and centre of attention. I would not use the simple colours I would use more variations.

TASK 2: USES AND GRATIFICATIONS

Objective:

1. Explanation of Uses and Gratifications theory
2. Application of Uses and Gratifications theory to a contents page of a music magazine

DEFINITION:
Uses and gratifications theory is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs. In 1960s, as the first generation to grow up with television became grown ups, it became increasingly apparent to media theorists that audiences made choices about what they did when consuming texts. Far from being a passive mass, audiences were made up of individuals who actively consumed texts for different reasons and in different ways. UGT is an audience-centred approach to understanding wider communication. Diverging from other media effect theories that question "what does media do to people?", UGT focuses on "what do people do with media?"

EVIDENCE:

1. In 1948 Lasswell suggested that media texts had the following functions for individuals and society:
  • entertainment, surveillance,
  • correlation and cultural transmission.
2. Blulmer and Katz expanded this theory and published their own in 1974, stating that individuals might choose and use a text for the following purposes (i.e. uses and gratifications):

  • Diversion - escape from everyday problems and routine.
  • Surveillance - Information which could be useful for living eg) weather reports, financial news, holiday bargains
Uses and Gratifications has been extended, particularly as new media forms have come along (eg video games, the internet)

TASK 1: MUSIC MAGAZINE INSTITUTIONS RESEARCH

OBJECTIVES: Analysis minimum of 2 media companies
Examples: 1 large company {Bauer, IPC}&1 Small company{Future, BBC Worldwide}

COMPANIES, CHOSEN?

1. Large Company

The first company I have decided to research and analysis is the MTV (originally an abbreviation of Music Television). I have chosen to use the following company in particular because it is well known throughout and also because I am much more familiar with the company. MTV music is a non-stop music entertainment channels set off by Viacom International Media Networks Europe. Launched on August 1, 1981,the channel originally aired music videos as guided by television personalities known as "video jockeys" (VJs).MTV Networks Europe announced the introduction of non-stop music channel in January 2011. MTV has spawned numerous sister channels in the US and affiliated channels internationally, some of which have gone independent. As of July 2015, approximately 92,188,000 US households (79.2% of households with television) have received MTV.

2. Small Company

The second company I have chosen to use is the BBC Worldwide because again it s well know through out and I have more understanding of it. BBC Worldwide Ltd. is the entirely owned commercial subsidiary of the BBC, formed out of a reorganization of its forerunner BBC Enterprises in 1995. The company casts BBC brands, selling BBC and other British programming for broadcast abroad with the aim of supplementing the income received by the BBC through the licence fee.

COMPANIES HISTORY & PUBLICATION MANAGEMENT'S ?

1. MTV

MTV Networks has launched variations of native-language regional variants of MTV-branded channels to countries around the glob. Today, MTV.com remains the official website of MTV, and it expands on the channel's broadcasts by bringing additional content to its viewers.
2006 to 2007, MTV operated an online channel, MTV International, targeted to the broad international market. The purpose of the online channel was to air commercial-free music videos once the television channels started concentrating on shows unrelated to music videos or music-related programming. The channel responded to the rise of the Internet as the new central place to watch music videos in October 2008 by launching MTV Music, a website that features thousands of music videos from MTV and VH1's video libraries, dating back to the earliest videos from 1981.
The site's features include an online version of MTV News, podcasts, a commercial streaming service, movie features, profiles and interviews with recording artists and from MTV's television programs.

2. BBC Worldwide

2013, BBC Worldwide reorganized the company along geographical, rather than divisional, lines to better serve its audiences around the world and to position itself to take advantage of opportunities in high growth markets. The seven geographic markets are grouped into three regions: North America; UK, Australia and New Zealand; and Global Markets (Asia, CEMA, Latin America and Western Europe). The two global business areas - Content and Brands - set the strategic framework and parameters for activities within the regions and keep a close connection into BBC Worldwide's parent, the BBC. Digital is embedded throughout the business.

Details look at 2 publication and whom their target audience are?
(1 publication should be music magazine)

1. MTV

In its early years, MTV's main target demographic was young adults, but today it is primarily towards teenagers, high school and college students.

2. BBC Worldwide

Suitable for an international audience – an example is the exploitation of the Strictly Come Dancing brand to become Dancing with the Stars – maximizing revenues by receiving a production fee from the local broadcaster as well as a sum from selling the initial re-versioning rights.
2013, BBC Worldwide reorganized the company along geographical, rather than divisional, lines to better serve its audiences around the world and to position itself to take advantage of opportunities in high growth markets.
